Cutting-Edge Salem Library Strikes Again

Don't get me wrong... I like kids, reading, and the Humane Society, but all three converging at the Salem Public Library to help shy children learn how to read aloud? Huh?

Here is the local "event" I found online tonight:

Read to a Pet
1:00 pm-2:30 pm 01/31 - GENERAL
Offers a chance for children to try the most relaxing, non-threatening way to practice reading out loud - reading to a dog or cat. The visiting furry friends have been trained and certified by the Willamette Humane Society as therapy animals and are mellow and friendly. free 503.588.6088
Located at: Salem Public Library, 585 Liberty St SE, Salem, 503-588-6052

What kind of culture do we have where kids are SCARED of reading aloud? I know public speaking can be challenging, but honestly folks, what were you thinking? Who wants to read to a freakin' dog? Maybe the kids should be encouraged to play and interact with the animals, or maybe learn what it takes to care for a pet, or learn about the Humane Society. I don't think Mr. Meow is going to care one way or another if he hears some harrowing chapter of Harry Potter.

It might be interesting to go to see who shows up... Oh wait, I have to feed the parking meter just to park there. Nevermind.
